Your figures

Just the outward leg. This page counts the return for you - do not double it yourself.

Use the figure you actually get, not the showroom one. City driving commonly lands 20-30% below a rated number, and the mileage calculator works yours out from a tank.

The price you actually paid. Pump prices move daily and differ by several rupees between states, so the round number here is a placeholder, not a quote.

About this calculator

A round trip is the one-way distance twice, and forgetting that is the most common mistake in trip budgeting. This page takes the outward leg and counts the return for you, so the doubling happens once and in the right place.

It also handles a journey you make repeatedly — a weekend run home, a site visit every fortnight — by asking how many round trips you are costing.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the one-way distance. The return is added automatically.
  2. Enter your mileage and the pump price.
  3. Set how many round trips you are making, if it is more than one.

Only going one way? Use the trip fuel cost calculator instead.

The formula

Total distance = One-way distance x 2 x Round trips
Fuel needed = Total distance / Mileage
Fuel cost = Fuel needed x Price per litre

The result states the distance it actually used, so you can see at a glance whether the doubling landed where you expected.

SymbolMeaningUnit
One-way distance The outward leg only km or mi
Round trips How many times you go
Mileage What the vehicle returns km/L or mpg

Worked example

250 km each way at 16 km/L with petrol at ₹105:

Total distance = 250 x 2 = 500 km
Fuel needed = 500 / 16 = 31.25 litres
Fuel cost = 31.25 x 105 = 3,281.25

Four such trips in a month: ₹13,125 in fuel alone.

Notes and limits

  • The return leg is rarely identical. A loaded car going out and an empty one coming back will not use the same fuel, and a mountain road costs more in one direction than the other.
  • Tolls are usually charged both ways, and some are discounted on a return within 24 hours. Neither is assumed here.
  • If the round trip is more than one tank, plan the fill-up rather than discovering it. The fuel tank range calculator says how far a tank goes.

What this calculation assumes

  • The return leg is the same distance as the outward one.
  • Mileage is the same in both directions.
  • Fuel only. Tolls and parking are not included.

Frequently asked questions

Do I enter the one-way or the total distance?

One way. This page doubles it for you. Entering the total as well would count the journey four times.

How do I budget a trip I make every month?

Set the number of round trips. Twelve monthly runs of 250 km each way is 6,000 km of driving, which is a meaningful share of a year for most people.

Is the return leg always the same cost?

Not exactly. Load, traffic, wind and gradient all differ between the two directions, so the doubling is a good estimate rather than an exact figure.
