About this calculator

Two sets of deductions come out of a marketplace sale, and sellers usually model one of them. The marketplace takes a commission, a fixed fee, a collection fee and often a shipping charge of its own; the courier takes freight and surcharges. Add packaging and the product cost, and what is left is frequently a quarter of what the seller expected.

This runs both engines over one order: the same marketplace fee rules the fee calculator uses, and the same shipping rates the shipping calculator uses. The three pages cannot disagree, because there is only one set of figures behind them.

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose the marketplace, or your own shop if you are selling direct.
  2. Enter the price the customer pays and, if you want margin as well, what the item costs you.
  3. Choose the courier, or enter what shipping costs you per order.
  4. Enter the parcel weight and, if it is bulky, its dimensions.
  5. Add your packaging cost per order and read what is left.

The formula

Marketplace fees = commission + fixed + collection + any others configured
Shipping = base rate + surcharges, on the chargeable weight
Fulfilment cost = shipping + packaging
Seller earnings = selling price - marketplace fees
Net profit = seller earnings - fulfilment cost - product cost
Margin = net profit / selling price

Each marketplace fee is charged on its own basis — some on the selling price, some flat, some on the fees above them, which is how GST on marketplace fees works. The order the components are configured in is therefore part of the answer.

SymbolMeaningUnit
Selling price What the customer pays Rs
Marketplace fees Everything the channel deducts Rs
Fulfilment cost Shipping plus packaging Rs
Net profit What is left after cost and all fees Rs

Worked example

An order at ₹999 with a 15% commission, a ₹40 fixed fee, ₹70 of shipping, ₹23 of packaging and a product costing ₹400:

Selling price 999.00
Marketplace fees (149.85 + 40) -189.85
Seller earnings 809.15
Shipping -70.00
Packaging -23.00
Product cost -400.00
Net profit 316.15 (31.6% margin)

Shipping and packaging are 9.3% of the selling price here — smaller than the marketplace take, and larger than most sellers' allowance for them.

Notes and limits

  • Where the marketplace's fees have been configured on this site, they are used and the manual commission and fixed-fee boxes are ignored. Where they have not, enter them.
  • Shipping charged to the customer should be included in the selling price, because the marketplace charges commission on it.
  • This is one order, delivered once. Returns are the single biggest thing missing from it; the RTO calculator puts them back.
  • Marketplace-fulfilled orders are priced differently from self-shipped ones. Where the marketplace ships, its own shipping fee is one of the configured fee components and the courier side of this page does not apply.

What this calculation assumes

  • One order, delivered once, with no return and no reattempt.
  • Marketplace fees come from the rules configured on this site where they exist.
  • Shipping comes from the configured rates, or from the per-order figure you enter.
  • GST on your own sale is not modelled here; the GST profit calculator covers that.

Frequently asked questions

How much does shipping cost as a share of an order?

For accessories sold online in India, shipping and packaging together commonly run between 8% and 15% of the selling price. Below about five hundred rupees an order, it rises quickly and can pass 25%.

Who pays for shipping on a marketplace order?

It depends on the programme. Self-shipped orders are your cost; marketplace-fulfilled orders are charged back to you as a shipping fee on the payout statement. Either way it comes out of your margin.

Does the marketplace charge commission on shipping?

Usually yes, where the customer paid a shipping charge as part of the order value. That is why the shipping a customer pays belongs in the selling price here.

Why is my net profit lower than this?

Returns and cancellations are the usual answer, followed by parcels that were heavier than planned and orders that needed a second delivery attempt. This page prices a clean, delivered order.
